Stuff Matters brings to life the man-made world around us. Suddenly steel, concrete and paper are fascinating when presented in an intelligent, funny and whimsical way. Materials science textbooks seem to be a collection of phase. The Right Stuff falls in the troublesome category of history books written by journalists. On the one hand, the book is wonderful to read, enlightening, insightful, and inspiring. On the other hand, there’s not a single footnote in the book, his bibliography consists of a single-digit number of works, and the author likes to make sweeping. Knock Knock clever desk accessories, office stuff, fill-in-the-blank books, gifts & affirmation cards. Bring humor, creativity and smarts to everyday life.
It’s been a crazy year. Many of us will have a stack of books next to our beds that has only grown higher in 2020. But it’s almost time to kick back with a book. Here’s the latest in our series about what Wellingtonians will be reading this summer.
Michael Baker, epidemiologist at Otago University, Wellington
The book that is top of my reading list for the summer holidays is The New Ships by Kate Duignan. I was given it for my birthday in July but I have not been able to fit in much recreational reading since then. I recently read Carl Shuker’s book A Mistake which was also set in Wellington, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading about familiar places seen through the eyes of a clever writer. So I am looking forward to immersing myself in Kate Duignan’s novel.
Dame Fran Wilde, former mayor of Wellington, Wellington MP
I have got a few good books to read including The Overstory by Richard Powers, Jenny Diski’s new one Why Didn’t You Just Do What You Were told? and few more - including some great gardening mags to help me with the design of my new garden! But the one I am most looking forward to is The Glamour Boys by Chris Bryant, about a bunch of gay British MPs who tried to warn Chamberlain about Hitler.
Gosia Piatek, the founder and creative director of ethical clothing label Kowtow
Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race, by Reni Eddo-Lodge. I was given by my partner for my 40th birthday. I like that the author writes in a very easy personable manner. The book stems from a frustrated blog post she wrote which gained massive momentum and sparked Reni Eddo-Lodge to write her book. The result is an illuminating and absolutely necessary exploration of what it is to be a person of colour in Britain today.
Kirsten Mason, director of Orchestra Wellington
Top of my summer reading list has been sitting reproachfully on my bedside table for months now, it’s The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. Reading it bit by bit isn’t working, I need to delve deep, get absorbed and abandon everything else around me for days on end! Also - e pīrangi ana au ki te whakakaha i taku reo - I’m hoping to improve my Te Reo! No doubt with the help of the fabulous Scotty Morrison.
Catherine Robertson, Co-owner of GOOD BOOKS on Jessie Street, IIML Writer in Residence 2020.
Top of my reading list for summer is Endless Sea: Stories told through the taonga of the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui te Ananui a Tangaroa (Massey University Press) by Frances Walsh, photographs by Jane Ussher. I heard the author talking about the book on Radio NZ and the snippets she gave were fascinating. It’s an area of New Zealand’s history that I know very little about, plus it satisfies my love of old objects and the stories that surround them. And it’s beautifully designed.

Martin Bosley, Wellington restaurateur and cook book author
The Man Who Ate Too Much, by James Birdsall. Beautifully written, an eye-opening book on James Beard, the “Dean of American cooking”. I have never fully understood Americas obsession with James Beard, the awards, the house in New York, but this will hopefully reveal why US gastronomes are.
It’s been a crazy year. My monsterthird grade james tes. Many of us will have a stack of books next to our beds that has only grown higher in 2020. But it’s almost time to kick back with a book. Here’s what a bunch of Wellingtonians will be reading this summer.
Claire Mabey, Director of Verb Wellington and founder of LitCrawl Wellington
I’m in desperate need of escape so I have NK Jemisin’s The City We Became ready for day one of holidays. Then I’m all for some comforting nostalgia so I’ve got Anita Brookner’s entire backlist (brilliant, domestic, quietly simmering characters). And Wellington writer Rachel Kerr’s novel Victory Park is teetering on the top of the pile with a build-up of my Frieze magazine subscription (for my arty essay fix).
Chris Tse, Wellington poet and writer.
Choosing books for a summer holiday always poses a packing dilemma. Luckily, poetry books are slim so I can throw a few into my bag without feeling like I’m overpacking (and still feel like I’ve got some variety!). At the top of my pile are new collections from poets Janis Freegard (Reading the Signs; The Cuba Press) and Karlo Mila (Goddess Muscle; Huia). Another travel-friendly book is local comic artist Tara Black’s This Is Not A Pipe (VUP), which is an strange and imaginative debut.
Monique Fiso, Executive Chef at HIAKAI
My partner, Katie, was recently op-shopping and found a few gems. One was The Shell Guide To New Zealand by Maurice Shadbolt. Really interesting to read this book 50 years after it was first published.
Grant Robertson, MP for Wellington Central
A Mistake by Carl Shuker and Nothing To See by Pip Adam. The summer break is my one chance in the year to read some fiction, although some government reports I get could fit that description! These are both Wellington authors, and I’m always keen to support local writers.
Rawinia Higgins, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Māori) at Victoria University

I have a stack of books I want to get through, including my latest purchases of the te reo Māori books from Te Rau Pukapuka Trust. These include the translations Hare Pota (Harry Potter), Te Rūānuku (The Alchemist), Nōu Te Ao e Hika e! (Dr Seuss’ Oh the Places You will Go’) and the original book, Mātāmua ko te Reo by Sir Timoti Karetu. If I don’t read them over the summer, they will never get read and just end up on my bookshelf alongside last year’s unread books.Kidstuff Books
Jane Arthur, poet and manager/director of GOOD BOOKS on Jessie StreetStuff Brookside Mo
I’ve long been a fan of NZ poet Airini Beautrais, and I’m looking forward to reading her first book of fiction, Bug Week & Other Stories (VUP). Short stories will be perfect for my retail-frazzled post-Christmas brain, and the publisher’s blurb promises ’a scalpel-clean examination of male entitlement’, which is always a, uh, good time.
